Is it Stress, Worry or Anxiety?

Coping with stress, worry, and anxiety can be challenging. At Integrate Counselling, we understand that each of these feelings impacts your life differently. With insights drawn from Nicole Vignola’s book “Rewire”, we’re here to help you find effective ways to manage and overcome them.

Understanding Stress, Worry, and Anxiety

Stress is typically brought on by external events and it can be very helpful. Stress is something we all experience when we’re faced with challenges or pressure. For example, imagine you’re up against a tight deadline or dealing with a big challenge, such as making a presentation in front of a group. Your body responds by gearing up for action, giving you a boost of adrenaline, energy, strength and focus. This is a natural reaction that is meant to give you the resources to tackle the task immediately in front of you.

Worry is the “thinking” aspect of stress, the mental loop of “what ifs” that may keep you up at night. It’s that constant stream of thoughts about potential problems or uncertainties. While a bit of worry can sometimes be helpful in problem solving or considering all aspects of a situation, excessive worry can contribute to ruminating or anxiety.

Anxiety is what happens when stress and worry become generalized and chronic. It is a deeper, more pervasive feeling of unease that often lacks a specific cause. It can affect your ability to function in daily life, creating a sense of dread or hyper-vigilance that lingers even when things seem okay. Our approach to managing anxiety involves a combination of therapeutic techniques, mindfulness practices, and support to help you regain a sense of calm and stability.
